A third option will soon enter the picture, though it’s no less expensive than the others. Arcade1Up is a company that produces recreations of classic arcade games for home use. The machines are always 3/4 the vertical height of the originals, but can be boosted to full size with a “riser” sold separately. This summer, they’ll be opening preorders for a Simpsons Arcade recreation.

It was a great surprise today when one of the scanner studios said we could come over to scan a bunch of little pieces from various prints of Flip the Frog cartoons-all things to add back to the films that are usually missing these segments. I was worried I’d have to scan entire prints of each to get these tiny pieces of soundtrack or picture on each!

Thomas said, “The Thing cannot hit anyone, man beast or monster. In The Phantom of the City I had the Thing punch a robot and that was cut. I did a little bit that involved the Skrulls popping out of the shadows with ray-guns, very clearly explaining that they were only Star Trek stun weapons and the word came down: ‘No guns of any kind!’ They didn’t like the way the Thing was threatening to tear apart Herbie and equated it with sibling rivalry so we had to tone that down into ‘good natured teasing’.”
These were sold as part of Disney’s popular “Sing-Along” video series, in which various film clips played with the lyrics keyed underneath. It’s an example of how what’s old becomes new again, because the sing-along cartoon was a bit of a throwback to the early Fleischer animation days that decades later yielded dozens of VHS titles for Disney and other video companies.
What struck me most during my research was how a company like Kelvinator, which at one time held 80% of the American market for electric refrigerators, disappeared from the consumer landscape so completely. At least in the United States. The Kelvinator brand is widely used for various appliances sold in Argentina, and Kelvinator refrigerators are still sold in the Philippines.(10) There are also some commercial refrigeration products bearing the Kelvinator name in the U.S. foodservice industry.(11) But as for a household name brand, it is no more.
Homer gorges on such items as Ham Ahoy, Much Ado About Stuffing, and a mystery product called “Tubbb”. He eats banana splits, following Bart’s advice to eat around the banana, as it is just “empty vitamins”. Another day of work looms, but he is still four pounds shy of his goal – and he has emptied the house of all food – and even the ingredients of food. Maggie uses her Play-Doh pumper to create a fake donut for Homer. Bart observes that the can says “non-toxic”, so Homer eats it, then steps on the scale. The magic number of 300 pounds appears. “Woo hoo!” shouts Homer. Bart then notices that Homer’s stomach is hung up on the bathroom towel rack, and when it is released, the scales top at 315 pounds – leading Homer to utter an embarrassed “Oh, my.”
